More on Cat Bowls and Dog Bowls

Pet bowls come in a variety of sizes, shapes and materials. The range of pet bowls you can buy come in a variety of materials from plastic, rubber, china to stainless steel. I do not recommend plastic bowls. Plastic bowls might be inexpensive, but some cats and dogs become allergic to plastic and develop skin irritations, and/or lose the pigmentation of their noses. Plastic being porous can trap dirt, odors and germs, which even your dishwasher will not be able to eliminate. Plastic can also leach plasticizers (most commonly phthalates) and colorants, into your cats and dogs' food, which are very harmful to their health, and can be chewed on by playful cats and dogs. I personally prefer stainless steel pet bowls. They are easy to keep clean and are harder to scratch and will not chip, which can harbour germs.

Also think about the different sizes and depths of cat bowls and dog bowls in relation to the type of pet you have. For example, if you have a dog with a long snout, such as a German Shepherd, then a deeper bowl would be more appropriate than a shallow bowl, which would make a great fit for a Pug.

You should consider raised cat bowls or raised dog bowls. The benefits of raised bowls or feeding stations are, fisrt it minimises the amount of air cats or dogs swallow while gulping and chewing food. Secondly they also help prevent vomiting and choking while reducing the likelihood your cat or dog will suffer from stomach bloat. Not having to lean, bend or stretch for food and water contributes to good posture and puts less strain on your pet’s neck, joints and hips. Finally, insects, rodents, dust and dirt are also less likely to reach food and water raised off the floor or ground.
